The Retro Mom

Hello!  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.

My sister, Julie shot the latest cover for New York Magazine, in an article titled The Retro Mom.   Styling by Amanda Carter Gomes.  The article is interesting and has made me think a lot about the progression of the feminist movement and how it relates to me being a mom today, after having been a daughter of a sahm and also having been a sahm myself for 12 years before my divorce from my former hubs and entrance into the work world.  I hope you can take the time to read it.  I wish I had time to explore with you some of my thoughts on it today, but alas, ironically...I have to get back to work on deadlines.

A few of my thoughts on the subject:
I will say that after having lived on both sides of the pond on this issue, I must say I am for mom's choosing what works best for themselves and for the balance of their family.  No matter where you are, moms, balance is a daily struggle, right?  For me, I work because I enjoy it.  I also work out of necessity.  I think women have a lot to share not only at home but in the real world.  Yes, there are days I wish I was a stay at home mom.  But, for me, 'working' works for us.  That's not to say that I don't wish that childcare and longer maternity leaves should be a built in for mom's who need it.

I often see and hear of a lot of mom's sucking up the brunt of the work load when it comes to kid's needs, kid's sick days, doctor visits, cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping and childcare.  Regardless of where women find their main purpose {home or breadwinning in the work place}, we as women need to band together and start demanding a bigger change.  Women should be able to enter the work force without the middle name of guilt.  We should be able to tell our daughters, with confidence, that they can be any thing they want to be when they grow up and while our sons are fed the same thing, they should also be trained to cook, clean, sew, arrange childcare and pick up some groceries too.  I think we're gaining a little ground, since studies now show that guys are now openly acknowledging a nod for equality in partnerships at home and work. But when it all comes down to it, the reality is that we women end up making more domestic sacrifices in general and that pressure really adds up.  Now, I know I chose to have kids and that life is hard sometimes.  I'm not complaining.   I just think we can do better at sharing work load.

More on this topic later.  Would LOVE for you to share your thoughts.  I know all you women out there have MUCH to share. Do you see a need for change?  How can we demand a change?  A letter to Hilary Clinton?  A small strike at home?  haha.  Just kidding.

Funny thing is, I was going to post our retro kitchen sample selections today.  How fitting, huh?  Taking a break from the kitchen.  Until tomorrow:)

Stay tuned for an exciting new guest post blog series.

Have a great day!

xx

UPDATES AROUND TOWN AND BEYOND

Welp, we went dark ebony {thanks for the surprise gift, honey}.  I hope we're not sorry.  I'm already super excited about the darkness counter balancing the stark white walls.  We are going to do extra high gloss
poly-uro.

We've received some mentions around the web. My internet friend, Amy, with the lifestyle blog, ABCDdesigns recently complemented our current house renovations on her blog.  Thanks, Amy!  You can see that Hicks Pendant post here.  ABCDDesigns is one of my regular blog rolls. You should make it yours too.

Amy is an incredibly tasteful tastemaker and talented in all the things that she touches.  Her fortes touch upon all that we love, here at Pickwick House.  They include: interior design, event planning, photo styling, window styling, and an appreciation for good food... although, she actually cooks the good food, {which is something I hope to aspire to do with my new stove}.

Funny story:  Amy is the one who initially inspired me to look into our AGA kitchen appliances.  And then, a couple weeks ago, within minutes of each other, she and I both posted our kitchen obsession of the moment with a post about the much talked about hicks pendants.  We really laughed about that.  Had to chuckle about our kitchens looking alike.

Also, I told you a few weeks ago about how I'm crushing on Bailey Mcarthy's designs.  Well, after I showered her with my love and adoration, we then engaged in email convo:)  She was very sweet.  I told her she would love my sister's art work, who's piece was coming up for auction soon in her town of Houston. Today, on her blog,  she's posted on my sister's work {julie blackmon}here, and then she was kind enough to put me on Julie's coat tails at the end.  Sweet!  {It kinda helps to have a sister who's world reknown.}

Btw, see and read both of these cute posts about Bailey's style on Matchbook mag, Part 1 here and Part 2 here.

More updates on the home front soon.  Btw, do you guys like reading my posts?  I admit, I'm feeling a bit insecure as it's sometimes met with lots of silence here./  I know you're reading.  I can see it.  THANK YOU so much for reading it!!!  I keep thinking I know I'm reaching people, but every now and then I'd just like to know if you're falling asleep on it, if it's just like reading the obituaries, or even better, if it's the gossip section.  haha.  I'm only lucky enough to be the fodder of all three, but most especially the latter:)  Now, don't get me wrong, the last thing I want to do is seem like I'm fishing for complements.  While I do appreciate nice complements, that's not what I'm aiming for.  When I ask/pose questions, it's because I want to know my readership.  What is it you are loving?  Reactions. Do you have things you want to share?  I LOVE hearing about them.
________________________________________

Now, for a little more honesty that I wasn't going to post, but then later decided to come back and add as an addendum to the original post above.  I don't normally like to get too deep here, but I felt I had to get this off my chest.

ADDENDUM:  {lawyer lingo....haha, had to use it.  You'll see why below:)}

Recently there have been numerous and continuing complaints made to the city over the last ten weeks about our house which is under going renovations.  Some 'one' in the neighborhood, whom we do not know and have never met, is complaining that we are  'devaluing the neighborhood'.   We recently found out that this person wants to potentially sue us as well as the city.  Honestly, this news really hurt.  Every now and again, it still hurts.  I've run the full gamut of emotions since finding out last week.   Alternating from hurt, to being mystified, then just, Well, feeling badly for the soon-to-be neighbor of ours who couldn't talk to us about his issue with us in person to begin with.

I do not know 'this person'.  But I now know that they will be a very close neighbor of ours very soon.

For those of you in and around our soon to be home,  I send apologies. I want to thank all of you for your patience.  I know it has to be so completely annoying to see dirty old trucks parked day after day.  Dust, mud puddles in our yard.  Ugly equipment setting outside {we currently use the garage as our woodworking workshop for the house renovations}. Week after week.  Month after month. On our behalf, at least no porta potties or dumpsters on curbs for months on end.

This seven month renovation has been a great deal of fun, as I've shared with you.  You know we love doing it and it sends thrills down our spines.  We've learned SO, SO much!  And while it's been fun, it's still been filled with challenges, then throw in some real life stuff, along with some family circumstances.

We are a family of seven, trying to make strides to better a property that was pretty dreadfully gross for many, many years.  {Btw, I'm wondering if there were ever complaints made about the property in all those years before we purchased it?}  Anyway, we've been spending all of our hard-earned money and then some trying to make the house a betterment for our family that currently sleeps all of us in a tiny, three bedroom, 1 bath house. It's a tiny house that's served us very, very well, but we're so excited to finally see our kids finding a much deserved space of their own to stretch out, inside and outside too.  We'd like to think we were making improvements not only for ourselves, but for a neighborhood that is new to us as well.  Embarrassingly, we have made a future neighbor, {hopefully not a pluralized neighbor} very disappointed.  Even before moving in. No safety hazards or breaking of ordinances, or parking issues, mind you, just a 'devaluation' complaint made over and over again.

I know, and I'm sure you are full well aware of that old saying, 'You can't please everyone.'.  Most harsh stuff and negativity rolls pretty easily off my back the older and wiser I get, and the more I interact with the public.  But when you know that an anonymous person will soon live inches away, I admit, I want to say, "Hey, look, we really are TRYING, and we are almost done. Come by and introduce yourself sometime, mister anonymous.  We want to get along with our neighbors. We have high hopes for bringing positive energy to the hood.  We have chickens that lay eggs that we plan on offering all our neighbors.  Not for throwing as a mean sloppy prank.  But for cracking into the frying pan and enjoying as a nutritious and hopefully tasteful meal."  {Last comment was not meant to be snarky or malicious.}  There are a few things I've learned in my forty years of life, and now I'm trying to teach my kiddos too.  I've learned it's far better to kill with kindness and to under-react rather than to over-react.  I'm still working on that one.  I know I've over reacted to plenty of things in my life, especially to trees being chopped down, streets being closed, and a kid being bullied.   haha.  AND then some:))  But what I hope to always continue to do is grow from uncomfortable situations, misunderstandings, and injustice.  There are things we can learn from each other if we just talk.  And, that is why, I guess, I appreciate an open dialogue.

Okay, so pulling 'em all out and rounding up all these insecurities and what-nots and underlying intentions upon posting gritty emotions...

My main goal isn't to get comments, praise, or reaction.  Okay, maybe it's a small goal. I share these posts because we love what we do as a practice, and we strive to share our 'best, bad ideas'.  Our greatest desire is for you to maybe relate to it in some small way. Maybe learn from our tips and also from some of the mistakes we make.  Yet, I still have a curiosity for what you may like or dislike reading about here.  You could even tell me what you hate about what I share {as long as it's respectful}. As long as I can still call you a friend and neighbor, and better yet, a reader:)

You know how this internet thing gets a bad rap sometimes?  Sometimes, I admit, there are days where I wonder if the blog and postings of our work is the bane of my existence.  Especially when my kids seem as though they are raising themselves while I blog.  haha.  Just kidding.  {Sort of.}

Actually, this internet thing has been really good for a lotta reasons.  I'm proud to say it's where I've met many of you.  It's also enabled me to make connections with others who are meaning to make a difference in lives. Bloggers sometimes get a bad rap, but there are many bloggers who are truly putting GOOD, solid content out there.  I'm daily blown away by what I plug into, even by my friends who aren't bloggers are posting great content on their IG.  EVERYONE has something to share.  AND, a final thankful clap for this internet thing that has served as my cloud for 'resting some of my 'things' and thoughts, as I've done here tonight.

This is what's left of my rambling thoughts tonight.  Thanks for letting me share once again, dear readers.  I am SO aiming to be good to go on a regular, shortened update tomorrow:)

Julie Blackmon{pictured above...third from the left}  If you don't know who she is, you've probably seen her work, and chances are you would recognize her unique and refreshing glimpses into domestic life.  She's a self-taught fine art photographer and her work has been much applauded far and wide.  Her photographs  look much like Dutch paintings and have graced the cover of Time Magazine, Vogue Italia, National Geographic, New York Times Magazine, and Real Simple.

I asked Julie to share some things with you and me...

Julie is giving one of my lucky followers a signed copy of her first book, Domestic Vacations.   Thanks, Julie.  And thanks for being the sister I go to for advice on just about everything in my life.  One of my favorite traits of yours is that you are passionate about standing up to injustices.

Another trait you have is that you have always been a very generous, insightful, and giving friend.

One of Julie's greatest unknown talents is how she learned the instinct of survival in a house with nine kids...  Julie is the fastest eater I have EVER known.

Love you, Julie.

Antiquified Beautz

Simple Warmth

BEd LOVE
As you can see, My second color scheme for the new studio/showroom builds on a neutral grey-brown.  I found the perfect shade.  Anything looks good against it.  It's warm.  It's rich.  It hides dirt and kids' fingerprints perfectly.  Slate, be the color. We're covering the ceiling with it too.  We think it'll make our chandeliers really pop.

Are you looking to find that perfect shade?  Let me help you.  As always, we give freeeeee in-home consultations.

LOCAL Excitement: I still haven't seen or read our very own locally written, filmed, and wonderfully acclaimed, Winters Bone, by Daniel Woodrell. Eleanor and Will read it and absolutely loved it.  SO excited for all involved and for the surprisingly-wonderfully-high number of Four Oscar Nominations the movie received!  I'm going to try to catch the movie at the Moxie this weekend.

AND TONIGHT:  SIX sister night tonight.  We're celebrating our sister, Lizzie's birthday.  I'm proud to say my sisters are my best friends. Since we all have kids and hardly ever go out, we're making it a night out.  Probably Sushi.  Happy Birthday, sista' Elizabeth Ann Arnold!

TIME Magazine

As you know, my sister, Julie Blackmon, has been doing some pretty amazing things. This latest one, has to be one of the biggest highlights of her career to date. She was asked to shoot the cover for Time Magazine! My niece, Mabel, who's a natural, is the sweet little model.

It should hit news stands today. The article, {which I have not read yet}, is about a study that reveals some pretty controversial findings regarding bribing kids for good grades. I can't wait to get my copy, read it, and frame it!

I also can't help but think what dad would be doing today, if he were alive. He'd be at National Art Shop having fifty copies enlarged, framed in gold, and placed in a glass showcase in our living room.

Proud Sister,
Sharon

Happy Friday!

Twirling

I hope you had a few nice Holidays over the weekend.

I did a lot of twirling over the Holidays.

First twirl about:
I was given the award for Best 417 Window Designs {windows by Sharon Taylor Designs @ Staxx.} I did a little twirl around after hearing of this award. I got dizzy and fell. No skinned knees. {Tweaking on the twirling to come...}

Other Twirl-Abouts: Twirled up a few paper discs for some parties and weddings {pink and blue ones for a photo shoot to come + Tutorials coming soon also}. {The brown gift box was for my aunt and uncles 50th} Happy 50th Jim and Polly!

Also, over the Holidays...Will's mom made at least ten of the most outstanding gourmet meals I've ever eaten...{for the whole lot of the 10+ family}! All I did was twirl the dish sponge around and watch her twirl her Martha Stewart-like creations. One of my favorites she made: Panetone Bread Pudding w/Custard, Pumpkin Drizzle and Whipping Creme.

Recap of Year:
First, I launched sharontaylordesigns.com, then the lifestyle blog a bit later in the year. In a quick turn-about off of those two things, I found my work being published among some of the best online sites in the design industry + the phone started ringing w/new clients and it hasn't stopped ringing since. Thanks again for all of your support!!

Sorry about the over usage of twirling. Once I find a word I like, it's over and over again until I'm done.

I'm done.

Best,
Sharon

A Winter Wonderland Baby Shower by Sharon Taylor Designs

These are me and my sisters. Here's the baby shower we threw for our sis, Lizzie. The bash took place at the home of our sister, Julie Blackmon. Baby Albert came into the world day before yesterday weighing 6 1/2 lbs, healthy and pretty darn precious.

Details:
My sister, Millie created the coolest little hand-knit stork sling and tied it to the flea market stork that she up-cycled! Is it not precious? The mantle decor was something so unexpected but totally chic. The big white star was a fold-out that I found for one buck @ Deals. And the vintage toy tiger was found for a few dollars at a flea market.

Props: Vintage toy animals, miniature deer, taxidermy, dollar lollypops, old milk jugs filled w/laundry detergent, milk glass vases from a thrift store, feathers, electric green urn, large paper stars, crepe paper balls, an up-cycled fisher price castle {I sprayed it w/white spray paint and covered the larger parts w/white cardstock}, cupcake toppers were hand-cut paper deer. I made some paper cut-out antler headbands too. That's my daughter, Eleanor, antlered in the picture below.

Julie's home is filled w/lots of cool portrait paintings. I love all of the lady portraits hanging on the walls...so symbolic of the number of girls born into our family. We are mighty in number and love celebrating our the birth of our babies!!

It was a sweet day, to say the least.

The heavenly white floral spheres were made of carnations, spider mums, pale blue hydrangea snippets, ranunculus, dendrobium orchids, and baby's breath. I nearly cried when I saw them.

Amy's Cupcakes, Champagne, Punch, Powdered Covered Donuts, Nuts and Mints were served. Simple, simple.

The team that made this so fun: Janae Hardy Photography, Janet Pearson, The Orchid Lady, Amy Cakes, and my genius sisters. Thanks guys!

Favorite Family Things: A Horner Family Post

For the Holidays, and as a goal for the New Year...my goal is to live like a kid again. Being a kid again for me means being a kid in the middle of a large family, withIN the largest family...ever. A big fam is grand. Never a dull moment and sadly, never enough food!

You know who inspired me to take a trip down good ol' memory lane today? My cousin Laura. Laura suggested blips and pics of things that are pretty much universally loved by me, my 99 million first girl cousins, my 5 sisters, my 5 aunts, my 2 girls, and my mom and grandma in heaven. I'm almost sure we were all born with a few of the same unconscious patterns, gravitations, and ideas...{special Ode to Grandma Horner}. The boys will have their faves to come too...

That's my cuz, Rachel, and daughter Naomi pictured w/their freshly cut do-it-yourself bangs. Love em!

A VERY condensed version of Favorite Family Things:

Laura: Maidenhair ferns, porches, fur, brooches, babies, do-it-yourself haircuts with {oops} short bangs.
Carrie: Poems, musicals, radiators, ghost in the graveyard, Lemonade, hot glue, beads, buttons, too many mirrors and never enough chairs, bikes w/ten baskets, dish towel blouses, murals.
Rosie: Hand-me-downs-and-downs-and-downs, trash/treasure digging, walking @ night with just mom, bunk beds, candy bars cut into 9 pieces and getting the biggest piece, spray paint, Dollar General, leaf houses, playing outside in 0 degree weather and sweating our hats off, peeling potatoes in dish towel blouses, doing dishes w/no dishtowels, beans and white bread...
Millie: paying for McDonalds in dimes, movies @ the plaza tower, sliding down the banister @ Horner house, static church dresses that stuck to your tights like glue, the Heritage, and DEADLY red rover...
Me: Duck tape, alluminum cans, running (instead of walking) from the parking lot into the grocery store, drawing an imaginary boundary line down the middle of a full size bed I shared w/Jeanie, forgotten siblings left @ church, the outhouse @ Mineral, Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair...

Laura, thanks for the inspiration for the Favorite Family Things idea! Babies might have to top the list though, don'tcha think?

As Paul Arnold {my dad, who's also in heaven} would say..."This place is Grand Central Station!!!" {Which could mean good or bad, depending on the day...but MOSTLY good. And we know we wouldn't change the chaos for anything!} It's a Wonderful Life!

Go get some ribbon candy now and leave it out all year round, just like Grandma!

Love you all!
Sharon
