SPRING NEWS & TREND Predictions

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

Need help finding cool things to spring-ify your home? I'll make it happen for you. My eye muscle is trained well and my kids have been teasing me that my online shopping addiction is my own version of 'gaming'.  Haha.  I may not be knowledgable on a lot, but I do know I have some great current and colorful sources on things.  And if we can't find what you're looking for, we can usually customize something for you!

Here are my hot picks for spring.  With Easter coming up real quick, I'm loving this mix of MINT, PEACH, Ombre wheel of HOT PINK, and ICY BLUE.  If you'd like to shop this look, you can go here.  Can't find what you're looking for there?  Maybe you'd like me to create a board to suit your style?  Or have something customized to suit your needs?  I'm happy to do that.  Just give me a call:)

Here's a virtual room above that I put together using those items in the board on top.  What do you think?  I love the peach to pink ombre.  OMBRE is still hotter than ever.  Did you notice that House Beautiful 's magazine cover page text was ombre last month?  LOVE it!  For spring, I predict we'll see a lot of ombre in varying shades of spring colors.

IN OTHER NEWS...

I told you we have chickens, right?  We inherited them from Will's dad who passed away just before Christmas.  This is a pic of Sylvia when the chickens first came to the new house property.  She looks thrilled, huh?  You can tell we're city folk.  I wasn't quite so sure about doing this chicken thing either. But, it's actually really easy, and fun.  They are so pretty, too.  They didn't lay too many eggs at first, and Sylvia was shy with them,  but now she and baby John-John love taking care of them.  John clucks at them like crazy and then laughs.  We like to go check on them every day after school.  Sylvia gets so excited to see how many eggs they've laid.  A good day is four to six, but lately, it's gone up to nearly a dozen eggs per day!  We have an abundance as you see here below.  Now we just need to move in and get to scrambling some eggs on the new stove.

Will did a little reading up about the chickens and feeding them. We've been giving them scraps of veggies, fruit, and peelings.  I think that's why they are producing so many.

In other news, I HAD to share this sweet little invitation below with you all.  A young girl threw her dear friend a baby shower here at Pickwick House over the weekend.  It was library themed shower and the invitation is an old library check out card.   Isn't it adorable.  I thought it was such a sweet idea for a shower.  Babies can't have enough good books, can they?

Tea Bar and Bites catered the party with their yummy spread!

Speaking of Tea Bar...Eleanor {my girl} whipped up a most delish new blood orange cupcake recipe last week.  She filled the pastry case with this amazing delectable.  I kid you not, these are THE best cupcakes I have EVER, EVER had!  There is a homemade curd surprise in them too!   And, just so happens that the beautiful oranges are from Home Grown Foods.  How 'bout all that for a batch of local goodness from all our wonderful neighborhood market vendors here on Pickwick street!  I feel so blessed to be here.  I hope you do too.

Be sure to stop by and say hi to us if you see us at the new house, or Pickwick House...and come see the chickens too.  Cluck, cluckety, cluck! haha.

Have a great week, everybody:-)

House Beautiful and Flying Kites

Hi ya'll.  Spring is upon us!  I saw someone flying a kite today. YAY!

Our house is almost done!  Floors can be walked on tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, I am working on a house over in University Heights.  Perfect client.  She is open to fresh ideas, color, and loves mixing things up.  You might see a sign for Pickwick House renovations in her yard soon.

I started with my client's bedroom last year in a fresh Rosemary Green, I believe,  from Benjamin Moore.  It is a bedroom I would die for, actually,  fully loaded with several of my favorite designer-ish things, including a gold sputnik and raw brass visual comfort lighting.    I haven't shared the beautiful images shot by Heather Cherie Photography from that bedroom shoot yet, and I apologize for talking about something you've never seen before.  The problem with posting images to the blog first is that it will most likely not get published by publications after it's shared here or anywhere else first.  I will keep you posted on the soon-to-be-where-abouts I've just learned of.

I first submitted the bedroom to House Beautiful, {one of my fave magazines} for possible feature. They replied with a "Love the bedroom, and use of color, but wonder if there are other rooms from the house to see..." {Positive note to self:  They responded to my work, which was great.  The sad fact was that no other rooms in the house were done or even in progress yet.'}

I'll get back to the client's house post here, in a moment, but first, I should share with you that over the last year I have begun to realize that I needed fuller projects to showcase a full breadth of my style.  When I look back upon the store front opening two years ago, I have to laugh, because I was taking on just about any and every project that came my way.  Including weddings. While I am SO grateful for all the support and work I have received from wonderful clients... THANK YOU to all of you, you know who you are!!!  {many of which are life long clients and friends now},  I would be lying if I told you I haven't learned some valuable lessons from mistakes I've made and also of projects that were not a good match for me.

I'm getting a little side tracked here, and perhaps putting more out there than you may care to hear, but I want to share with you a project that I learned SO much from.

One project in particular where I took on a 'friend of a friend' without a contract being signed.  {I'm sure you know where this is going.}  He was a nice guy and I fully expected to take on the challenge of knocking his socks off with the 'please factor' for an upcoming local magazine spread that he needed to be ready for in a few short weeks.  {BAD IDEA to not do a contract, btw....For both myself and that client.}  Without going over the contract, he had a somewhat vague idea about what I expected and vice/versa.   Because of the rush, I tried to rush into it too fast.  I was so eager to please him, and flattered that he wanted me to work for him.  I failed to start it off with the foundation for our agreement.  A contract.

I took the project on in my ninth month of my pregnancy and finalized the project the week of my baby's birth, in the dog days of summer.  Not only that, the project was outside.  In his garden shed, that he wanted to turn into a wine tasting room.  In the heat.  In July.  NO air conditioning.  Nine months prego.  WHAT was I thinking?  Ha.  The end result of the space ended up being executed beautifully by myself, and my intern, and my team of reliable and efficient guys...but not without heat exhaustion and a bad case of mastitis....THE week of my baby's birth.  Regretfully, I went back to work on this very project THE day after arriving home from the hospital, even though Will had urged me to take time off and told me to tell my client to fly a kite for a while.

I am a perfectionist and rarely leave a project without giving it my all.  I got mastitis.  BAD. Urgency was all I heard in the client's voice, and I just did not want to let him down. I SO wanted to please him.  I worked my butt off, but in the end, I still did not please him.  So goes that same ole saying..."You can't please everyone."

This post can't go without a big shout out to my my intern, Hillary, who worked for free for countless hours on this one.  Also, to my exceptionally talented carpenter who charged a very discounted wholesale price to the client for gorgeous, custom made cabinets, and to my contractor, Stormy, who ran out there at least three times and never charged me or the client.  {The project made it to the local magazine, but without  a mention of Pickwick House or any links to my website.  I should've fully expected this would happen.}

Looking back, I wished I had not taken the client on.  There were cues that I should've picked up on.  Expectations for custom designs for custom woodworking, customized furnishings, and customized accessories to be done in a short amount of time.  I made him mad that things weren't done faster.  I hope that this never happens again for me, for future clients, or for any other first time designers starting out.  I hope you can learn from some of my mis steps.

Here are my
VALUABLE LESSONS LEARNED:
1.  Be realistic about the time and scope of the project.  Working on a house is a labor of love.  If there is a deadline, make sure you allow extra time for customized orders.
2.  Be up front with the client.  Go over EVERY single thing in the contract.  Take your time in talking about the money, the timeline, and the up charging on items that you are sourcing, etc.  Flat fees vs. hourly.  Clients need to know what to expect.  They are paying for it, after all.  If you are clear from the beginning, then the trust factor is built upon a firm foundation.
3.  Let them know what you expect.   It's okay to expect a glass of water from a client.  Especially in the 100 degree heat.  If the project is going to be published, let them know that you own the copyrights to the work, and that you expect on-page magazine credits.  This should be in the contract.  It should even be written into the contract specifically how you would like it written:  i.e., Interior Design:  sharon taylor of sharontaylordesigns.com/, items in garden shed from Pickwick House.
4.  Charge client for all project manager's time, even if they are unpaid interns.
5.  Reiterate and 'refrigerate' yourself on hot days on occasion that good things take time and know that sometimes backorders make for heated exchanges, also hot days require air conditioning.  haha.  Customized things take even longer.  And, with certain work rooms and mills, it takes that, times three.
6.  Don't get in a rush when signing a new client on.  Interview them.  Be selective.  And don't take a job because you are desperate for money.  Don't work for free.  I still tell myself not to work for free.  And many times, under sell myself, all for the love of what I do.

Okay, so where was I?  As, I was saying at the beginning of the post....We are now  reworking the rest of the house in University Heights.  Kitchen revamping...gutting the dark granite, getting rid of old appliances, and all things beige.  Bye-bye beige!!  Dining room, and living room overhaul too.  All being done in fresh, springtime colors.  We are adding some sweet turkish rugs, a fabulously quirky galleried art wall, and some wallpaper touches, and using many of  her already existing antiques and family heirlooms.

Do you love green?  Well, I do.  I can hardly get away from using it on all projects, I love it so much.  We are doing a deeper, more daring green than I'm used to. I am calling it a happy hunter green.

This is the chandelier my client found on craigslist for $40!  Makes me think of lucite.  Lucite is still happening, for me, anyway.

I LOVE this one!!  Isn't it not perfection? Not sure where it's going yet.  Maybe her office.

Just some of the ebay and etsy purchases at the framers.

Pulling some wild colors, patterns, and textures together.  Don't worry.  We're not going with that blue color.  Haha.

Gotta run now.  House is a wreck with samples the baby is scribbling on..

P.S., one more thing to share...

I thought I'd come back and share this piece above.  Not sure who the artist is, but I love it.  Sort of struck a cord with me since I not only love b&w, but because I appreciate the artistry in finding that line where the client and designer converge to make something beautiful.  Also, that there is always another side to the story.  And, perhaps, most insignificantly, it places the importance on signed agreements too:-)

THANKS SO MUCH FOR STOPPING IN!

COME ON!

Spring cannot get here soon enough! Baby is STILL mending.  I don't remember a time where my littles were sick this much and for this long.  I strongly believe it's because they are subjected to much more stuff when they go to preschool.   Preschool is a good thing, but the sickness it breeds is not.  Just as I was sending Sylvia off to school this morning, she got sick, and started crying when I told her she couldn't go to school.  Haha.  {A real good indicator of how much they have enjoyed being cooped up with me for the last few days!}  Any of you moms out there relate?

I really hope this means our spring and summer will be healthier and more productive.   I have so many projects and deadlines waiting on me and I'm anxious to show off some really cool things that we have going.

That said, we are we are still seeking internships.  Please send email and resumes to sharontaylordesigns@yahoo.com

Sorry for the boring, sickness posts you've heard over and over.  I hope you all are feeling well and happy to see the sunshine as much as I am today!

To see my latest kitchen board for a client, go here:  olioboard.com/boards/181796-d-s-kitchen.  It's going to be a bright and cheerful change up from what it once was.   Think marble countertops, subway tile, all white cabinets, colorful furnishings, all new appliances, apron front sink, and gold accents.

Whippoorwill

Thank you all for your sweet and interesting comments to my last post.  I really appreciate the love and suggestions received in my inbox too.  Thank you!!  Someone's response to me was, "It's a small, temporary problem."  That is so right.  Very small, indeed!

Spring cannot get here soon enough.  Little guy has stomach bug again, poor fella.  Are there two strains of that virus this year?  Crazy.  So, while I'm working from home today, I'm catching up on an old movie I haven't seen in years.  "Legends of the Fall".  Gah, I had forgotten how incredibly sad and complicated it was.  What a timeless, most beautiful set design and cinematography.  And, Julia Ormand, Brad, and Aiden.  Sigh.

I have six days left to submit as many olioboard creations as I can create to the olioboard contest.  The first two boards I submitted the last few days are pretty theatrical and whimsical in style.  I had to get that style out of my system first.  I realize it's not for everyone.  Haha.  I am open to suggestions on the next ones I create.  What's your style?  Maybe I'll create one for you.  I'm currently creating others for clients and even a potential client on IG who liked the others I showcased.

The contest theme is STRIPES.  So, I 'have' to incorporate stripes.  I decided to go my typical bold, black and white striped background.
"WHIPPOORWILL"
When I started this board I imagined a girl inhabiting it to be a bit quirky and so I decided to give each board a personalized 'storied' description.  The one above was actually inspired by Will's second cousin.

Description: Samantha enjoys nature and the sport of bird watching. Wild birds in particular. Adventures to mossy creekside knolls, forests at dusk, and the Ozark mountains are among this stylish girl's jaunts.
"whippoorwill!" ~Sharon

You can vote for this board if you follow this link.   Under neath the right hand corner, click on the check mark inside the red heart:)  You can vote for it one time per day for the next six days.  You can 'shop the look' there too.

"TEARS OF JOY"
You can vote for this board by following this link.   Same instructions as the one above.

To see all the other entries in the contest, go here.

Thanks for stopping in!  Enjoy the rest of your day.

House Update

The weekend was refreshing for us, how 'bout you?  Me, Will, and the babies went flea marketing and found several area rugs for the downstairs.  That's my favorite kind of family day, what about you?

This rug above was a good find.  Will spotted it with his good eye.  I love that it's so finely detailed, hand knotted, antique,  not a 'rumpler', and it has some black in it. Our floors are currently being sanded, and the cabinets, leg-kicks, moulding, tile work, and walls are still a work in progress, here in the kitchen.   We are waiting on the custom made brass etageres, and reworking some of the hardware to match them.   We will probably have a small free-standing island on the rug.  Can I tell you how happy I am that this kitchen has plenty of free walking space?  I see a lot of kitchens with monster islands that are way too big for the space.  They 'lock' people in at parties in a claustrophobic way.  Kitchens seem to be where people gravitate when entertaining, so I really wanted this space to feel open enough to throw back some wine, feel welcome, and make people want to linger.  By having a free standing island-table, we can move it in or out to make accommodations.
Here's the back hallway rug we found too.  It's hard to see what it looks like with the lighting, but it's going to pair well with our other downstair rugs.

Doesn't Bubs look like he's a poor peddler from the Oliver movie?  "Looking fo some bwead", he says.

I couldn't be any happier about the honed marble slabs we got.

These two colors have been a source of great debate.  Will and I have always wanted ebony floors, but after hearing from everyone [including other designers], how hard they are to keep clean looking, we're now unsure of what to do.  I understand the hardships of cleaning, but I still want the ebony.  Will wants to go even lighter than the one on the right.  That's when we really got 'into it'.  HA!! I finally gave in and said, 'Whatever you think, honey.'  We'll see what happens. What would you choose?

Thank you for following, and thank you for your comments!

Design Camp Attendee, Austin Texas

Hi All.

To those in the midst of preparing for hurricane Sandy:  My thoughts are with you.  Sending strength and good thoughts your way!

I just returned from Design Camp in Austin, TX.  It was the first of a series of more camps to sweep across the US.  It was also a first time camp experience for me.  I found it to be completely amazing for many reasons.   First, and foremost, so I could educate myself more for you.  I figure I owe that education to you, my clients, here in the Midwest.

Above, is a pic of the portfolio case I put together to take to camp, using an inexpensive portfolio case from Walgreens, a gold coin thrifted brooch and red ribbon.  {Super easy, super inexpensive, yet classically organized looking and hopefully professional. hehe.}

HGTV personalities and celebrity designers, Lori Dennis and Kelli Ellis {co founders of Design Camp}were warm, funny, and very generous with their knowledge as well as their a-list line up of amazing speakers!  I was extremely honored that I was a chosen recipient to receive a free tuition pass thru Ronda Carman's blog, All The Best.  If you are a designer or  in the line of this industry, I strongly encourage you to go to one of the upcoming camps.  The next is slated for Atlanta, I believe.

Happy Monday!

Scenes from the Old and New House

I hope you were able to spend some time outside over the weekend with this beautiful weather we've been having.

I took my sketch pad outside with me while the baby napped and drew up some kitchen plans for the new house.  See the speckled stuff on the sketch?  Well, that's Bubs's doing.  Bubs woke up while I was mid sketch and, as most times when I'm concentrating on other things, he usually gets into stuff.  Often times, while I'm having he coffee on the porch, he can't stay away from a particular potted plant. He loves to run his fingers thru the dry potting soil.  He loves to scatter it too.  While I continued sketching, he became filthy, the porch became filthy and he made the sketch filthy too.  So, there you have it, a sketch with real grit.  Haha!

This is what we're looking at right now in the kitchen.  Notice the plunger on the floor?  That's bubs's favorite toy.  Maybe he'll be a plumber!

This is the fish pond in our new back yard.  You can't tell from the picture, but it's actually a kidney shape.  I want it to be a rounded circle pond instead.  Will added the urn over the weekend. He plugged the fountain into it, and on his first try, he got it going!  It has a nice trickle sound with the water that gurgles and spills over the top.

The babies had so much fun with their cousin, Graham, who lives next door at our current 'old' house.   We will sure miss seeing and playing with him everyday.

What a golden weekend!  Wishing you golden skies and golden opportunities this week!

Throw Back Thursday: Happy/Sad Day!

My past client {which turned into a dear friend of mine} texted me today with happy and sad news.  Boca Mocha, the restaurant we designed together has been sold to another restaurant operator.  She told me to come get the last tacos they'll serve today!  *tears*

scott cotton photography

It was such a sweet labor of love all around.  Special place in my heart for that project and the friendships we made there.

To read more, go here.  I still need to share the oodles more photos of the space.  It turned out great and even won a 417 best restaurant design this past year.

Happy Thursday!

Tuesday Tip: Glitterati Style

Pickwick House DIY

Tuesday's tip from Sharon Taylor.

Sharon: Here's a great tip for adding a little bit o' hip to your frames.  Lately I'm LOOOVING campaign dressers for their uniquely styled hardware that is usually brass.

Here's an example of a campaign dresser which happen to also be in the same shade of red {via pinterest}.  Take note of those super cute, brassy, sassy edges.

I thought I'd make my own nod to that campaign effect by embellishing some of our large scale frames at the shop.  We'll be using for some upcoming {spirited} weddings, but I think they'd be fantastic used in interior spaces.  This wedding in particular has a lot of gold glitter going on, so I thought, why not bling up the edges of these guys?  I think they make a great, sassy & smart exclamation mark to an otherwise boring old frame.

So, I purchased two sheets of gold scrapbook paper for $1.99 each at Hobby Lobby.  Traced the shape onto the paper that I wanted, cut them and then hot glued the pieces on.  Super easy, super cheap, and super cute, I think!  I think they give a great sassy & smart exclamation mark to an otherwise boring old frame.  What do you think?

I will share you the finished product here in a few days.

Happy Tuesday!

Throw Back Thursday: Slipcovers

Hello!  Here's my first 'Throwback Thursday' post.

So years ago, my home was featured in Better Homes and Gardens special edition of Do It Yourself.  While my taste and style has changed considerably since then, one thing that I find I still love in this room is the slipcovered sofa.   I think slipcovers are timeless and can be worked into any room.

How do you feel about slipcovers?  Love them or hate them?

On a side note, it's been brought to my attention, that the format for commenting on my blog posts is challenging for those of you that have tried in the past to leave a comment.   My intern has reworked the settings for you to comment more freely now.  When and if you do comment {insert smiley face}, there is a chance that the settings may only let you comment anonymously, so be sure to leave your name.

Hope you have a nice day!

Golden Shoot

Here I am on-site looking for good angles on a project that's almost finished!

Tomorrow is the photo shoot for this project.  It's a room that's slowly evolved and even as I write this, the muralist is cutting a stencil for painting something a little extra special on the walls {think gold}between now and tomorrow morning.  I will be loading the van with extra props today and also going to buy a gold fish w/blue rocks to bring life and movement into this space:)  It will be a special outing for Sylvia to go pick one out.  Hopefully we keep the gold fish alive 'til the shoot and I'm also praying that this is a 'golden' shoot too. haha!!  {Shoots stress me out a bit because placement is a lot of heavy work, steaming and pressing, and taping, and never as easy as what they should be or what they look like in the mags.}

Come back for tomorrow's post where I'll be sharing something entirely new and exciting with you!

Happy Tuesday!

Design in a Day Package!

Crisp fall air has arrived!  I'm in the mood for pumpkins, wheat grass, bittersweet, and goard decorating. How about you?  I found these pics of our house from a few years ago.  I was obsessed with the heirloom pumpkins then, and still am now.  All the varying shades too.  You might think, 'Wow, that had to cost Sharon a pretty penny to decorate her house with the price of those pumpkins.' It did.  But, I actually bought up a bunch of the heirlooms for inventory to use on clients' outdoor spaces so these were just for my own stylizing fun.

Our stoop.  I'm gonna really miss this house when we move.

Here's one of the homes we decorated.

{A nice little welcome to a side gate path.  I used a $3 thrift store stand for this one!}

Difficulty in finding the time or motivation to decorate inside, outside, or for personal parties? Let us help! And don't forget that the other Holidays are fast approaching, {keep in mind we are already booking early November dates}.

AND....Pickwick House is offering a one time special "Design in a Day" package to spruce your house up inside an
d/or out. You can choose 1/2 day or full day personalized, experienced, award winning decorating and/or party planning for the most amazing pad/bash you've ever had! $350 for two designers for a 1/2 day and $600 for a full day. At the end of the day we'll provide you with a list of priorities for moving forward if needed.

Happy Monday!!

Fall

Olivia has just joined Pickwick House as an intern for the next two semesters.  She wants to be a wedding planner.  Here we are on site at one of our exterior living room projects just before heading back to the shop to brainstorm a really special upcoming wedding.  {Wearing many hats is part of the job.}  She doesn't seem to mind.  Love having Olivia!

Last Friday afternoon I decided we should take time to 'get inspired', so I took Olivia and my three youngest kiddos to an MSU recital to take in a Rachmaninoff cello sonata and Brahms G minor Piano quartet.  Funny thing was that there was an enforced intermission to go to the basement when tornado sirens went off.   That was an experience!  {I'd like to thank my cousin Ned for letting me know about his viola performance with that quartet.}

Fireplace is Complete!  Just in time for Fall!

Dirt floors are not ideal, but we're really happy to see it progress to this point.  Last week, this area was still a deep, dark pit.  All wiring was recently laid underground and a telephone pole removed that was really messing up the symmetry of the space.

In choosing the outdoor foot print material, things can go really wrong.  We've been seeing a surge in properties using stamped concrete.  The stamped concrete is a cool thing, but I've noticed that a lot of people try to get too creative with finishes and molds that end up looking super-like, well...ugly.

Getting back to this area...I really LOVE the idea, look, and feel of pea gravel for this place, but the practicality of maintaining pea gravel will be a pain for an area this large.  Pea gravel washes away, and if it's not maintained regularly, you'll have bare spots.  So, I selected an aggregate {which is a pea gravel floating in concrete}.  It should give the appearance of a pea gravel.  And just to the right and left of the pad is where Will is going to add some structured soft scaping.  It should frame off the space nicely for our clients.

Backside of the new furniture that arrived from Restoration Hardware.  {Leagrave Collection}.   Can't wait to snap pics of a roaring fire here soon.  My clients told me they had a toast by their first fire here two nights ago {at midnight after his late shift}. So cute.

Stay tuned for more progress here.  Happy Friday ya'll!!

Welcome

Welcome back to the blog. In case you hadn't noticed, I took a long break from the blog over the summer.  I'm back in full swing now and am committed to sharing more of the projects we've been busy working on over the summer.  So, welcome.  And Thank YOU for your support and for visiting!

The front of the house was painted this week!  What do you think?  It's a Benjamin Moore paint called Dragon Breath.  {Funny name, I know...hehe} I've used this color before and love it.  It looks sort of black here in the photo, but it's definitely more of a brown.   Will did such a nice job cutting in on the molding, don't you think?

Okay, here's my question for you.  What color do we paint the front door?  We initially were thinking red, but now I'm not so sure.  The tile color might conflict.  Thoughts/suggestions welcome.

Art Collecting

I'm always inspired by the vintage art I find while flea marketing and in travels.  This is Jay Jeffers design studio/shop Cavalier in San Francisco.

Yesterday I found this boat picture here on a local flea market jaunt. It was a steal for less than $150.  I've started my own collection.  You should start yours today.  Need art guidance or a helping hand with arranging your walls?  Give Pickwick House a ring:)

Have a nice day!

Summer Dreaming + Scheming

Hi there.  Believe it or not, I'm back to being a somewhat narrative decorator again {for today anyway}.  My posts have been occasional and few lately because frankly, I'm swamped with work and managing all the things that come along with the biz.   I don't know where to begin on updates.  It hurts to think about the amounts of things we have under our belt.

We do have three new interns at Pickwick House that I'm thrilled to have this summer.   They've been extremely helpful in helping me update Pickwick House internally and externally.  I will be introducing them to you soon.

Things I am loving right now...

Sun drenched light and a good, cold frappe from Boca Mocha.  I'm SOOO happy to say we found the time to shoot that great little coffee/cafe shop #commercial space that we designed over a year ago.  Scott Cotton Photography

While it's hot out there, I really do dream of days where I can lounge by the pool and read a leisurely good book without the interruptions.  In the mean time, while my business is taking baby steps and strides forward, I am taking small bites out of this book below....

The Business of Design book by Keith Granet.  It's teaching me much-much about balancing creativity and profitability.

2011 Interior Design Award: Office {Sharon Taylor of Pickwick House}

Hi All!  Could the weather be any more invigorating and inspiring?  I hope it'll put a pep in your step to come into Pickwick House today thru Saturday for our "FALL into Style" Open House.

My interns have been busy helping me ready the store while I work on more design projects outside of Pickwick House.  I'm so happy to have five interns joining me this fall!  I could still use two more art + design students to join in for our fall and winter window installations.  Qualification Must-Haves:  must be a hard worker who is passionate about hunting for the unconventional objects to weave and create a storied window.  Please email me if you are interested.

I'm so proud to share my 417 Mag's winning interior design award with you.   Here are a couple of pics from the online version of the magazine....and here's the link.   To see a better overall room image, take a peak at the September issue of 417 Home, now on newsstands {p. 70}.    I'm a little sad to say it, but...we're already moving on with this office.  It actually was recently just disassembled to become a little girls nursery.  That's the good news! I hope to share that soon.

Special Thanks to my intern, {now assistant}, Hillary Ellison and my two older sons who helped me load up a truck load of props to use for this photo shoot, on one of the very hottest days in July, I might add.  You may not realize it, but a lot of work goes into preparing a room for a photo shoot.  It took all day to get things situated just right for every angle of that lens.

Hope to see you today!  Bubba Jack will be here with me.  He's one of my best-natured babies, so be sure to come say hi.
