Blooming At Pickwick House

As winter lingers and just keeps a hangin' on, all I do is gravitate to my favorite spring go-to's.  TULIPS.  What types of blossoms make you bloom?

This vignette, here at the store...to me is perfect blend of the two seasons melding together. The focal point of this photo is a champagne bottle from our store's opening.  And the funky elephant tusks are fun anchors.  The fresh orange tulips give-off happy to me.

Pickwick House

COME in to the store for a slice of spring and to see our new spring vignettes.  We have fresh flowers in the house starting at just $6.  Perfect gifts.  Along with many other things here.

Happy Weekend!

Spring Flings at Pickwick House

I'm back and in full force mode for spring!  Busy with a few new clients and planning several workshops that are already starting to fill up.

Firstly, I'll be hosting a March 5th workshop {see invite above} in our beautiful new studio...lots of entertaining ideas that will be plenty colorful and plenty tasty.  Very tasty... because we'll have a special guest and friend in The House...local culinary star, Patty Lynch, of Simply Delicious.  She is the one that rocked it out with her yummy Southern Cuisine at the Euro Cirque Wedding we worked on together last August.  In case, you didn't know...that wedding is now being featured in REAL SIMPLE Weddings Magazine, on news stands for the 2011 calendar.  To see the full blog feature on that AMAZING wedding, click here.

We're also super excited to be sharing our studio with others as a venue for private parties.  We'll be adding our special a la carte package rates to the web-site soon, so stay tuned.   Included in one of those packages, will be a complete fire-cracker package, where we do all of the one-of-kind designing, and decorating themed party for you.  A party that is all yours in an intimate setting...without it being your big hairy mess.

Nearing the end of March, we'll be hosting an easter basket workshop with food, fun, and music. You can craft your little sweetie's baskets, here.  We'll provide all the unique trimmings.  And you can either bring your own baskets or buy some from the store.  Stay tuned...

Hope you're enjoying the sunshine.

Countdown Finale: Gifts from Sixth Sister

How was your Valentines day?  Mine was loving.

Alrighty, now I know I promised a sixth day giveaway before Valentines Day, {our store opening day}, but we got a little behind schedule and were not able to begin moving furniture in to the new space until Saturday. We had a little over 48 hours to set the entire store up and be ready to open the doors for a soft opening afternoon party.  We're a little exhausted, but mostly just filled with happiness for how it fell into place and also turned out to be a beautiful weekend and day for opening.  I can't wait to share photos from the store and party with you.  It was a day I'll not ever forget.

My giveaway:  Two of my most favorite things...
1.  One of my custom designed, and created down-filled pillows from the line we carry at Pickwick House {all lovingly made to perfection by the talented artist, Kendra Skinner of Lonie Mae}.  This pillow is made with a zipper so you can unzip it when it gets dirty and throw it in the wash...even bleach it if you have to.  It's one of those pillows that will only get better with age and softer with each wash.  Value: $78.

2.  A beautiful little candle from a home-based company in California and I'll be carrying the line in the store as well.  It is hand-poured using soy wax.  The moroccan glass that the wax is poured into is, by itself so sweet, but the scent that is poured into it is even more sweet.  It comes in an assortment of light spring fragrances.  It also comes with a special box that has a gold stamped wax seal.  Value:  $32

Since I'm late in posting this and since it's been such a busy time for me, I'm extending the entry time to Wednesday, the 16th.

Tidbits I will share:

One of my favorite quotes:  I'm going to have to say one right now that sticks with me {is actually one of Will's favorites too}:  "You will make all kinds of mistakes, but as long as you are generous and true and also fierce, you cannot hurt the world or even seriously distress her.  The world was meant to be wooed and won by youth."  --Winston Churchill

Currently obsessed with: reading about how to succeed in business and watching Syl dance.

What film I love:  Places in the Heart {Sally Field portraying a naive widower in the depression who struggles to hold onto what little they had and also provide for the family with their cotton field farm business}

Favorite Meal: Steak and Potatoes

Who I'd like to Meet:  Martha Stewart

Favorite memory growing up:  Dad taking us just us girls out for "girls club" in his little blue volkswagon.  We'd first go to the restaurant, Ebenezers and then to Swensons Ice Cream Parlor.

Also, my fifteenth birthday.  Mom hired a square-dancing caller and I had a hoe-down party at night with my friends on our driveway.
                                                                    **********

That's it for today.  I hope you'll enter the giveaway.  I'll announce them on Thursday.

Have a great day.

Countdown Giveaway: #5 of SIX Sisters

As, the give-aways comes to a close, I should congratulate those of you who've entered...because your chances for winning one of these gifts is pret-ttttty high, ummmm.....considering the number of you who have signed up.  Come dear ones...it's as easy-peasy as pudding pie to log in as a follower and then leave a comment + your email.  I entered a giveaway just last week on the lovely and popular PVE's {blog} and won a darling set of letter press LOVE notecards that I am planning on putting to good use this year with my kids + myself + will.

What would be better than giving the following gifts to yourself or someone you love?  Reminder: You can sign up for each day's give-away, and the entry deadline is now extended to February 14th {v-day}.  Be sure to check back in for a give-away that I will be offering come Monday.

Before I start with Millie's Gifts, here are today's random thoughts:

*First off, I'd like to thank my sisters, who have put some time, thought, and talent into the countdown giveaway for the store opening.   Thanks, guys.

*I'm sure you know by now which sister's which, so I'll not post that same ol' picture again of all of us.

*Someone mentioned that the past four blog titles make it sound like I'm giving my sisters away.  No, but they will be for sale at the store.  Just k.

*Yesterday, we road-tripped to pick up some really cool, one of a kind, fragile goods. We loaded them into the bed of the truck, which was/is still fully mounded with snow.  No bubble wrap needed. We just covered the breakables in snow and then later uncovered the buried treasures with our shovel.  Hopefully this ice age will end quick, so we can move in and not break our backs, bottoms, and babies {goods}.

*Store's soft opening is Monday.  Just four days away and we haven't even begun the set-up process.  {Lots of coffee and patience needed.  Slow-it-down on panic}

*Hey, locals, Don't forget that the store will have fresh flower bouquets from the lovely Orchid Lady to purchase, and Eleanor's freshly baked sugar cookies + slushy-pink, berry sweetheart drinks + recipe cards on Monday.  And, of course, complimentary shopping and limited supplies of take-home gifts.

*I'm overwhelmed by everyone's generosity.  I had a fellow colleague/friend offer up her whole "girls- night-out-group" to spend their "precious" hours helping us out at the store on Friday night.  How sweet is that??!!

*It's been a long stretch leading up to this point and I've had some bumps in the road.  "I'm not afraid of storms for I am learning to sail my ship."--Louisa May Alcott
* With the bumps, come great knowledge and understanding.  On this day, I have gratitude for all of the infinite possibilities in my life that are continually proving themselves to me this year.

Alright, enough about me...here's what you want to hear about...Camille Joy Arnold Johnson.

She goes by Millie and she is the finest genius. The eighth of nine, she fully understands the wealth of time.  She makes the day both useful, and pleasant and takes not a minute for her own greed of selfishness.  She is the mother of three... Mabel, Ralph, and a sweet little Birdie.  She sews and sings and makes really beautiful dolls, blankets, dresses, curtains, clothes, and other things. She grew up fast.  Married Young.  No regrets.  Not one.

Millie is the best roller skater and homemaker ever..  If you've ever been to anthropology, that's what her house looks like, and she's made almost everything in it.  Anthropology store actually asked her to make 100 dolls in a six week period, but she told them "babies can't be made in a hurry".  Millie lost mom at the tender age of fifteen, in the midst of the two of them reading to each other each night...the Charles Dickens novel "David Copperfield".  Far too young to have lost, but so much of mom remains in her, nonetheless.  She has strong convictions that precede great actions.  A woman of ALL good traits + the prettiest hair and drop-dead gorgeous braids!

                                                ********************************

Millie's giveaway:  You will see nothing like these dolls anywhere.  She made one for Sylvie's birth and I cried.  Such sweet loving details are poured into her creations.  Framable, Wearable, and Stealable, almost edible.

Here's what Millie had to share with us...

Countdown Giveaway: #4 of SIX Sisters

A Tiffany Blue Photo Album with a cover page image of Julie Blackmon's + a Vintage Candy Dish Filled with Lizzie's favorite thing:  Candy...{ozark saltwater taffy}

sisters from left to right:  me, lizzie, julie, rosie, jeanie, and millie

I hope you all are liking the six day giveaway week.  In addition to today's....I'm going to have two more days of sister give-aways between now and Monday {the day we have our soft opening}, at Pickwick House.  It's going to be a busy weekend for us.  The store update: We are going to start loading tomorrow to move everything in.  We have things stored all over town, the garage, staxx, flea markets, and at the painters. We'll have two days to set up and get the computer system loaded and ready to go.  I was hoping to have a full week to make the store look like I had imagined it in my head, but I still think we can get it done.

**************

Dear sister, Lizzie. Sixth of Nine kids...A finisher of marvelous schemes, and dreams.  She has an indomitable spirit that gets things done.  An ever-flowing source of useful information, stories, ideas, artistic visions, thoughts,  and business savvy skills, she infuses her magnetic personality and sweetness into all that she does.  Her to-do lists are more like Audrey Hepburn show times because she makes her work looks effortless, fun, and beautiful all at the same time.  Passionate about others, she's spontaneous and ready to help at the drop of a hat.  Nothing is too hard for her to accomplish.

She loves to laugh and is known to break down laughing so hard that she can't stop.  She was also the sister that was left behind at church one Sunday.   No one in our family realized she was gone until after an hour and a half had past...we had gone out to eat, come home, and we got a all to attention of her absence by phone call from the church deacon, telling us that Lizzie was still waiting at church. She was probably five.  Bless her heart.

Lizzie was and still is a crowd-pleaser {who also won a city-wide concert piano award}.  She was also mom's favored one when it came to chores or leniencies.  We all kinda got upset from time to time over the favoritism, and Lizzie usually took the brunt of our frustrations.  Looking back, it wasn't her fault. She did have a sweet, wide-eyed look that none of us could match, I guess.  She still has that way about her, actually.

                                           ********

Lizzie had these things to share when I asked:
*Favorite Quote...No word was ever as effective as a rightly timed pause. - Mark Twain.  (I've never been good at this but wish I could be.)
*Currently Obsessed With - Vintage Valentines and candy dishes.
*What film has had the greatest influence on your style/life...Funny Face with Audry Hepburn.  S'wonderful, S'marvelous.
*I'd love to meet...either one of the Hepburns.  Alive, Betty White
*Favorite Meal...Crab legs with risotto or a twice baked potato....and lots of butter and a glass of white wine.
*Best Memory Growing Up...Late night snow ball fights with Mom and coming in for some homemade hot chocolate while we scorched our freezing toes on the the steaming radiator.

Thanks, Lizzie.

Countdown Giveaway: #3 of SIX Sisters

Signed copy of Someday and One of Rosie's Hand-made Paper Doll Sets

me, lizzie, julie, rosie, jeanie, and millie

Sister, Rosie, the sixth of nine kids.  An absolute whirlwind of charm, whimsy, and talent, she turns the world right side up!!  Rosie is a self-taught writer, illustrator, and mother to Goldie, {+ little one on the way}.  Her work is a delightful reflection of the happy life she leads and also projects to everyone around her.  She takes great care in everything she does and brings a unique calming and magical touch to her home, work and everyone in it.

Her house is sister hang-out at four oclock everyday and it feels like a good, cozy cup of tea in London-house in these winter months...but at the same time and for the most part, her home is like a large sailing vessel headed for adventures across the great blue sea {imaginative kid-land}.  Her dining room table is one long stage of crafting, sketching and daily inspirations that entrance kids and adults alike.

Growing up, she could tangle herself into balls with legs wrapped around her neck while playing the piano.  Piano skills, NOT, but knack-of-humor she's got.  Feeling a little stiff and cranky? Rosie will lighten you up and make you laugh like no other.  With a name like Rosie, how could she not?

                                                        ****************************

Rosie had these things to share when I asked:

ONe of your favorite Quotes... "Above all, don't fear the difficult moments.  The best comes from them. --Rita Levi Montalcini

Currently obsessed with...breakfast, lunch and dinner

What film has had the greatest influence on your style...I think it goes back to The Adventures of Natty Gann. I really liked that old fashioned tom boy look, the time era seems adventurous, and everything was so make do with what you got. Plus, I have always wanted to run away, hop a train, and make friends with a wolf or any animal that would have me as a friend. But the real reason is that Mom took me to see that movie for my birthday.

I'd love to meet...up with mom for a walk or tea by the fire.
Favorite meal...fried chicken and mashed potatoes and gravy.

Best memory growing up...making Valentines with mom. Dad buying all nine us our very own box of Russel Stovers chocolates. Mom got the biggest box.

Rosie's giveaway includes a signed copy of Someday, and get ready for this....The most adorable signed ensemblage that accompanies one of her signature paper dolls.  Completely one of a kind, hand made, with stylish outfits, crowns, and a miniature box of chocolates for the paper doll.  I wish you could see this!
Almost too cute to touch.  Framable, for sure.

Countdown Giveaway: #2 of SIX Sisters

In order from left to right:  me, Lizzie, Julie, Rosie, Jeanie and Millie

Dear sister, Jeanie, is the next sister in line after me.   She's as graceful and beautiful as Grace Kelley, and just as good as gold.  Growing up, I always slept with her in one of the ever-shifting double beds, half-broken twin beds and rotating bedrooms. Many times I selfishly begged her on late nights to wait up for me while I finished washing the seemingly endless piles of dinner dishes....just so we could sing duets with each other before we drifted off to sleep.  It was usually "I love you, Lord", and "White Coral Bells".   She was always good company, would listen to my ramblings and would do whatever I told her to do.  We clogged together, sang together, played the cello together, and roller skated like mad together.

Being Jeanie's next-up older sister, I think she always looked up to me, but now that we are grown, I look WAY up to her.

She is gifted in many areas.  Smart, funny, and a much better decorator and person than me.  Kind, patient, and giving beyond belief.  She never says a cross word.  Her witty poetry and collage skills would make anyone mad with envy.  She makes each one of us sisters a carefully crafted birthday card each year that looks and reads as if she's spent hours and hours on it.

She is also the one sibling who took up the piano at a really young age without knowing how to read music.  Most of us siblings felt chained to the piano every morning, but Jeanie was one of those prodigies that could play a song beautifully right after hearing it, and would play George Winston for days until our brothers would shout for an end to it.

She plays Claire de Lune just like mom always did and plays the piano daily for her little boys, Jude, Hank, and Amos.

Love you Jeanie!  And, thank you!!
                                                                     *********
Jeanie had this to share with us:

Favorite Quote For the Day...You always get what you've always got, if you always do what you've always done.  -unknown

Currently obsessed with- sandals
What film has had the greatest influence on your style/life...Anne of Green Gables---I guess I always have loved puffed sleeves, the thought of a bossom friend to clip a lock of my hair for...and of course Gil

I'd love to meet...Chopin and Mozart
Favorite meal...sushi or quite the opposite--a chicken rice casserole
Best memory growing up...roller skating down Lombard, especially after watching Funny Girl for the first time

Wanna chance to win one of Jeanie's many gifts?  A darling hand-knit scarf.

Don't forget that you can enter for each day's giveaway.  And please tell your friends about the store opening on Valentines Day.  {Oh, yikes. ...if you could only see the amount on my unfinished list.}

Countdown Giveaway: #1 of SIX Sisters

Julie's giveaway:  Her autographed book, Domestic Vacations

sisters me, lizzie, Julie, Rosie, Jeanie, and Millie

Yes.  It's here.  The giveaway I keep talking about.  The first one is from the oldest sibling and sister that has brought our family much pride.

Julie Blackmon{pictured above...third from the left}  If you don't know who she is, you've probably seen her work, and chances are you would recognize her unique and refreshing glimpses into domestic life.  She's a self-taught fine art photographer and her work has been much applauded far and wide.  Her photographs  look much like Dutch paintings and have graced the cover of Time Magazine, Vogue Italia, National Geographic, New York Times Magazine, and Real Simple.

I asked Julie to share some things with you and me...

Favorite Quote...  "Most people go through life dreading they'll have a traumatic experience. Freaks were born with their trauma. They've already passed their test in life. They're aristocrats."
Diane Arbus

Currently Obsessed With...following snowstorms on the NWS animated weather radar map
What film has had the greatest influence on your style/life...everything Nora Ephron
I'd love to meet...Diane Keaton
Favorite Snack .....  Nacho Cheese Doritoes
Best Memory Growing Up...sneaking in to wake up and play with the baby (whichever youngest sibling it happened to be) during their nap

*********

Julie is giving one of my lucky followers a signed copy of her first book, Domestic Vacations.   Thanks, Julie.  And thanks for being the sister I go to for advice on just about everything in my life.  One of my favorite traits of yours is that you are passionate about standing up to injustices.

Another trait you have is that you have always been a very generous, insightful, and giving friend.

One of Julie's greatest unknown talents is how she learned the instinct of survival in a house with nine kids...  Julie is the fastest eater I have EVER known.

Love you, Julie.

Fires and Fond Times

Snowed in today.  We're supposed to have a blizzard that is unlike any other we've had since the date of 1912.  It's days like these that I really wish I had a fireplace.  Are you cozying up to your fireplace today?
Isn't there such a welcoming comfort to the blazing light, warmth, crackles, and the smell and pop of that burning wood on a snow day.

Growing up, mom always built good fires for us to sit around and daydream for hours.  Snow days were especially nice because everyone {moms, kids, friends, aunts and uncles} would walk over and congregate as if time was not a care...We'd sit around in the living room and wait for mom's homemade cinnamon rolls to come out of the oven.  After a bit, we'd go out sledding or snow man building.  I miss those days of fires, time standing still, and family.  But today is a day for making fond memories for my own kids.

Until I have a real wood burning fireplace, I'll just light lots of candles, and perhaps I will carefully stack some pretty wood logs in a nook or corner of my house to make it be known that I intend to one day build really useful, comforting and welcoming fires for my family and friends.

Even though these images of stacked wood are so pretty and artful, I still want the warmth and light, don't you?

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten the give-away!  IT'S COMing this week.

...one of the quotes that I'm finding so inspirational these days from Mark Twain.

Let the countdown begin!  Our store opening is set for Valentines Day.  The day of LOVE.  Just 14 more days.  It's a date I'm marking as a date with myself and you!  Thank you for your love...
